I love the Northumbrians! Have you ever seen the old Michael Wood BBC documentaries "In Search of the Dark Ages"? You might enjoy them, especially the one on Eric Bloodaxe. He was called "the thinking woman's crumpet," which I find hilarious. You can find them on YouTube nowadays. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Search_of_the_Dark_Ages

I'm so glad you're writing in this particular format. I loved reading this little slice of your life and thoughts. The idea of seeing a dream die and having to pick up the pieces is very relatable, probably for many of us. I'd say you're doing incredibly well in that department;)
